Midsummer park
A gate left open, an avenue of trees, still water at the end of it, and a hedge doing its best to be pink.
The gate stood open, so the walk started there: through the arch into a gravel avenue, ochre outbuildings on both sides and the lindens closing overhead. Ten minutes in, the water.
Midsummer light lasts all evening, so nothing had to be hurried. One afternoon, one walk, from the gate to the hedge — anything more would have been the same hour said twice.
The gate and the avenue
The entrance side of the estate: a passage with its doors folded back, two ochre outbuildings, and a grassy track that goes on until the trees take it.
The pond and the park
Past the buildings the ground opens out around the water: a pond, a lawn, and the yellow house keeping watch along the far edge.
